January brings low temperatures, which makes it a good time to be car care aware. Your tires lose about one pound of inflation pressure for every 10 degree drop in outside temperature. If you have not inspected your tires recently, they could be seriously under inflated. This wastes gas and it causes premature tread wear, both of which can be hard on your wallet.

February usually is the coldest month of the year. Does your heater do its job on those chilly mornings? When the engine does not warm up the way it should, you may not be the only one suffering from the cold. The engine suffers too, and the reason could be a faulty thermostat or low coolant. Running too cold or too hot can damage the engine. It can hurt gas mileage too, so be car care aware.

• Let the motor warm up to assure reliable performance.

• Scrape and clear all windows.

• Clean and free frozen wiper blades.

• Wash road splatter from headlights, taillights and windows periodically.

• Turn headlights on before driving and leave them on to help others see you.

• Drive slowly.

• Don't tailgate; leave plenty of room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

• Test traction by braking at low speed to get the feel of the road.

• Avoid congested, hilly, sharp and winding roads.

• Be careful when turning or changing lanes; don't over steer or make sudden movements.

• Slow down on bridges and shady areas where ice forms first.

• Four-wheel drive vehicles may get moving quicker on ice, but they cannot stop any faster.
